Love Will Tear Us Apart는 앨범에 [Closer] 수록되지도 않은 곡이었습니다.

[Blue Monday] 1983

My ’80s- Peter Hook

Drugs, Booze, genius Manc punk disco – worra decade!

You’re in the list twice, for Joy Division’s Closer and New Order’s Low-Life. What made those groups so special?

We did stuff to make us happy. We were allowed complete artistic freedom. Blue Monday was 10 minites long, but we put it as a single; Love Will Tear Us Apart wasn’t on the album [Closer]. Everyone else was doing what they were told. Also, we had a 50/50 split with Factory so we could live for a year by selling 10,000 albums- Siouxsie & The Banshees would have had to sell 100,000.

Were you approached to Live Aid?

No. I take it Bob Geldof didn’t like us. You felt quite affronted that you weren’t asked. I’ve never heard anyone say they turned it down.

High point of the decade?

Appearing on Top Of The Pops in 1983 [with Blue Monday]. Doing that progranne was a dream for my generation.

Low point?

The suicide of Ian Curtis. Ian died in May 1980, so the ’80s were all up for us after that. It couldn’t have started out more fucking disastrously, could it?

Craziest moment?

There were so many… we got to America quite quickly, and they knew how to treat you over there. If we were outside a nightclub, when we said we were New Order they’d drag you in, put you in a special room and fill you full of drugs and alcohol. In England all you’d get was a thick ear. In Amercia we discovered hedonism and entered that whole mad world, then to finish the decade with acid house… the ’80s was fucking great for us.

What were you listening to?

Bow Wow Wow, Haysi Fantayzee, all that stuff that felt it had come from Malcolm Mclaren. I thought Adam Ant was a great character and Marco Pirroni was a fantastic guitarist. Theatre Of Hate, Death Cult, Play Dead – the serious goth side of it was good. I DJ in America a lot and they’re fucking obsessed with the ’80s. Play anything from that time and they go mental.

Did the decade make you millionaire?

Yeah, but thanks to the Hacienda I lost it – six times over. We worked out that we lost between six and nine million on that club and Factory…
