Tom Tom Club의 흥겨움에는 Talking Heads의 흥겨움과는 다른 무언가가 있다. 이것은 아마도 흥겨운 기조를 유지하면서도 뭔가 변태스러운 분위기를 풍기려는 David Byrne의 존재가 없는 대신 밝고 명랑한 Tina Weymouth 와 그 녀의 자매들이 그 자리를 메우기 때문이 아닐까 싶다. 그래서 아직도 그들의 음악은 발랄한 10대들의 댄스파티를 연상시키는 흥겨움이 있다. 그들의 2013년 유럽 투어 비디오를 모아봤다. 언제나 한국에 올는지.

Tom Tom Club의 새 EP “Downtown Rockers”가 9월 11일 출시된다. 특이한 점은 앨범을 LP와 mp3로만 판매한다는 점이다. 디지털 버전에는 보너스 리믹스와 얼터너티브 버전이 포함된다. 타이틀 트랙은 “Downtown Rockers”.
Talking Heads의 드러머이셨고 현재 Tom Tom Club의 드러머로 활동 중이신 Chris Frantz님께서 트위터의 내 계정(@TalkingHeadsNet)을 팔로우하셔서 감동먹고 편지를 보냈더니 친히 답장을 해주셨다. 신곡을 준비 중이시라는 “Working on some new tunes now!” 내 원래 DM과는 약간 동떨어진 내용이지만 팬의 입장에서는 여하튼 감동의 도가니탕이랄 수밖에….

이 사진은 뉴요커 로커의 커버를 위해 찍은 거예요. 그때는 힙합 씬과 다운타운 씬 사이에 수많은 상호수분작용이 시작되고 있었죠. Tina Weymouth와 Chris Frantz의 새 밴드 Tom Tom Club는 막 그들의 첫 앨범을 내놓았는데, 이 앨범에는 랩과 힙합 비트가 녹아들어가 있었어요. Tina와 Flash는 전에 만난 적이 전혀 없었지만, 금세 아주 친해졌어요. 난 사진찍는 동안 붐박스를 들어달라고 부탁했죠. 그들은 춤추고, 노래하고, 레코드를 교환했어요. 촬영의 에너지는 대단했습니다. 사실 Tina가 최근 내게 말하길 그 촬영 후에 그녀는 Grandmaster Flash를 Talking Heads가 그들의 새 앨범을 녹음하고 있는 스튜디오로 데려가 그를 위해 몇 트랙을 연주했다고 말했어요. 그리고 나중에 Flash는 Tom Tom Club의 “Genius of Love”를 그의 “It’s Nasty.”라는 곡에 사용했죠. 난 음악적 교류가 그 촬영으로부터 이루어졌다는 사실이 사랑스러워요.

Tom Tom Club은 뉴욕 펑크씬의 선두주자 Talking Heads의 멤버 Chris Frantz(드럼), Tina Weymouth(베이스) 부부의 싸이드프로젝트 밴드이다. 그룹의 시작은 Frantz 부부가 휴가를 즐겼던 바하마에서 Monty Brown과 Stephen Stanley를 만나면서부터였다. 넷은 David Byrne과 Talking Heads가 시도하지 않았던 새로운 스타일의 뮤직을 만들기 위해 뭉쳤다. 로맨틱하고 댄써블한 팝뮤직 스타일을 지향했던 이들은 1981년 데뷔앨범 Tom Tom Club이 골드앨범을 차지했고 이 앨범의 히트싱글 Genius Of Love는 이는 Talking Heads가 이전에도 이후에도 달성하지 못한 상업적인 성공 사례였다. 그들은 그러나 Talking Heads 활동을 계속해나가면서 Tom Tom Club을 지속시켜 나갔다. 심지어 Talking Heads의 명작 Stop Making Sense의 게스트로써 선보이기도 했다. Talking Heads가 1991년 해산하자 Tom Tom Club이 그들의 주된 활동무대가 되었다.

Almost 30 years on, Tom Tom Club’s debut sounds as bright as when the stylus hit its grooves the first time round. Sprightly, breezy and infused with an unselfconscious sense of fun, it sounded – as it still does – like a very modern record. Drawing a line in the sand, Tom Tom Club eschewed the influences of their CBGBs contemporaries by immersing themselves in funk, R&B and the then-revolutionary sounds of the nascent hip-hop movement.
Tom Tom Club의 데뷔앨범의 디럭스에디션이 영국에서 5월 18일 발매된다. 이 앨범에는 그들 곡들의 희귀버전 이외에도 이전에 발표되지 않았던 곡들이 수록될 예정이라 한다. 모든 트랙이 리마스터된 것들이다.
