AMG REVIEW: For a straightforward 1960s dance song, “Harlem Shuffle” has gotten around. It was written by Bob Relf and Earl Nelson, who recorded it as Bob and Earl. To a steady shuffle beat, they describe the steps of a new dance before intoning in the catchy chorus, “Do the Harlem Shuffle.” Released in late 1963, the original recording made the pop Top 40 and the Top Ten of the R&B charts, and it was picked up by a succession of performers. In 1966, Earl Nelson, using the name Jackie Lee, scored a hit with “The Duck” and put “Harlem Shuffle” on his chart LP The Duck. The same year, the Traits, the backup band for country artist Roy Head, which included a young Johnny Winter, released a single version of the song that made the lower reaches of the pop charts and the Top 20 of the R&B charts. Other ’60s renditions were recorded by the likes of the Righteous Brothers and the Foundations. But “Harlem Shuffle” was given its greatest exposure 20 years later. The Rolling Stones, who had begun their career covering R&B songs, recorded a version of it for their 1986 Dirty Work album. Released as a single, it soared into the pop Top Ten. If that wasn’t a sufficient sign of the song’s perennial appeal, then its next appearance in the charts was. In 1992, the rap group House of Pain sampled the original Bob and Earl version of “Harlem Shuffle” on their platinum-selling Top Ten hit “Jump Around.” — William Ruhlmann
